A Thousand Shades of Green

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Watch even a little TV these days or flip through a magazine and you will see a lot of companies lining up to do their part to help green up the planet.  There is a seemingly endless list of little actions and big initiatives that we can embrace that adds up to a major and lasting impact on the environment.  I call it a Thousand Shades of Green.  Unfortunately, this has all the signs of a fad that will come to an abrupt end long before we accomplish the mission of consuming less energy and producing less waste….as individuals, companies, and as a nation.

The good news is that the intense focus on Green is producing real bottomline results, introducing innovation and creating new products that would not otherwise surface.  Alternative energy is also seen as a economic revival and national security issue.   These corporate and national objectives will keep the effort alive long after advertising dollars are allocated elsewhere.

When Visage Mobile investigated our own efforts, there were three shades of green that define our strategy:

1. The Mobile Workforce - mobile workers are greener than traditional workers for a variety of reasons and we have the best tools on the market for managing and supporting your mobile workforce.

2. MobilityCentral as a product - we designed and developed MobilityCentral to be eco-friendly by reducing paper waste, by recycling of mobile devices, and much more.

3. Visage Mobile as a company - we are implementing several policies and practices to ensure that we are consuming less energy and producing less waste.

In the coming weeks, we will be publishing our “Green Paper” that describes our comprehensive support of all things Green.    It’s one more reason that MobilityCentral is the clear alternative for managing your mobility.

Stay tuned.

Enterprise Mobile Executive Summit

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Last week, Visage Mobile was one of the sponsors the Mobile Enterprise Executive Summit.   With few vendors and lots of executives and project directors of mobility programs in a variety of industries, it really gives you a sense of the priorities and plans of enterprises as mobility becomes more and more mainstream.

From what I could gather, there are three major categories of mobility projects at enterprises:

1. Infrastructure deployment…be it devices, networks or other enabling technologies.  Innovation continues at a furious pace.   But success stories abound in the smart deployment of breakthrough technologies that give the mobile workforce better tools to stay connected and informed with greater speed, convenience and price.

2. Application enablement… the deployment of applications, beyond email that gives enterprise productivity gains, competitive advantage or process efficiencies.    The best story about application enablement came from the Mobilizer Award winner: San Diego Fire and Rescue.   This was a multi year battle that took lots of hard work, stakeholder buy-in and persuasion, a fare share of good luck and the faith of a few key people to make this project a success.   Read more about it in Enterprise Mobile Magazine online edition.

3. Mobility Management… the use of technology and best practices for expense management, mobile device management, asset management, policy management and more.   This is the focus of MobilityCentral from Visage Mobile and increasingly the priority of enterprises with emerging or maturing mobility programs.

It’s difficult to estimate the percentage of dollars being spent in each of these categories, but safe to say with the billions of investment in enterprise mobility, all projects are getting a fair share of attention.

As you prepare your budgets for next year… think about your allocation of mobility dollars in each of these three buckets.   Also, set aside some dollars to attend the 2009 Mobile Enterprise Executive Summit.  The industry insights, the professional networking and the well orchestrated couple of conference days, will make you glad you planned ahead for this one.
