Mobile phone management will see Android revolution, but no Google-made phone
Wednesday, October 21st, 2009Experts say that while they expect Google’s Android cell phone operating system to make a big splash in the coming months as a spate of new devices is released, Google will not pursue plans to manufacture its own Android phone.
Kent German, writing for CNET news, points out that Google has everything to lose and almost nothing to gain by manufacturing its own device: "I can’t understand what Google would gain by going head-to-head with manufacturers and carriers that have embraced the OS." German points out that six manufacturers have already signed up to provide consumers with numerous devices using Google’s OS, and that three of the big four wireless network providers will support Android devices.
The rumor began with securities analyst Ashok Kumar, who told TheStreet.com and InternetNews.com that the search engine giant would release its own phone at retail, which would be able to use any wireless network. German says that this seems unwise, since wireless providers like Verizon have recently announced plans for their own Android phones and would not welcome confrontation.
Google declined to comment on the rumors.
