Serious Twitterers get a mobile device all their own

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Electronics manufacturer Peek yesterday released a mobile device called Twitter Peek, which will connect to the popular Twitter microblogging service and allow users to read and post on the site.

The Twitter Peek is being sold exclusively at Amazon, for the price of either $99 or $199, depending on the pre-paid service plan selected. The higher price buys a lifetime of access to Peek’s proprietary network, while the lower one gets six months. Twitter Peek service costs about $8 per month after that point.

Some mobile management analysts question whether a Twitter-exclusive device can be profitable, since most internet-capable smart phones can accomplish the same thing with much more diverse features, but Don Reisinger, writing in a guest piece on CNET, says that mobile browsers and Twitter occasionally fail to mix well. The service is also a bargain compared to smart phone data plans.

Others, like John Biggs at TechCrunch, remain unconvinced, saying that the Twitter Peek’s interface is clunky and unintuitive and that "the scrolling is really bad." Biggs also noted that the Twitter Peek is a poor choice for users who follow more than a few feeds, as the beeping tweet alert goes off constantly.ADNFCR-2628-ID-19444049-ADNFCR
