Syncing wireless phone applications: A fine art
Monday, November 16th, 2009With the rapid expansion in smart phone use, data like email, contacts, and appointments need to be synced between smart phones and personal computers. All too frequently, however, the various applications involved lack the easy functionality required to make such syncing seamless.
Dave Rosenberg, guest writing at CNET, says that the data chain is highly complicated, with users inputting data into the same system from different devices, including web apps, desktop programs, and mobile applications. This, according to Rosenberg, makes seamless syncing difficult to achieve.
Further complicating matters, says Rosenberg, is the fact that nearly all services have their own proprietary syncing technology – there is no unified standard for syncing common data between multiple devices. Rosenberg writes that a "white label" solution – like Funambol, the open mobile cloud sync service – could simplify inter-device communication.
Mobile security is another concern for mobile device management professionals, due to the threats posed by insecure wireless networking and the newfound presence of mobile malware, like the two worms that attacked jailbroken iPhones earlier this month.
