Analysts say Google might be working on its own Android phone
Thursday, November 19th, 2009Speculation is swirling among the pundits of the gadget world over new rumors that Google may be planning to launch its own branded Android mobile phone, making for new challenges in the world of mobile management.
The new rumors say that the Google device – already dubbed the gPhone – could be a data-only device, with no traditional voice plan as offered by the big telecom networks. Instead, the gPhone might use Google Voice to provide talk functionality, taking advantage of the VoIP connection to route voice and internet data over the same connection.
Analysts are divided over the possibility of a gPhone, with some saying that Google would be foolish to compete with the handset makers currently manufacturing Android phones, and others saying that the company is visionary in its attempt to "own the user experience," to use PC World’s phrasing.
Android has already created quite a buzz in the cell phone management world with the recent release of the Motorola Droid, which has been widely billed as an "iPhone killer."
