In the face of rising data use, Verizon insists that the network will hold

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

With the much-ballyhooed release of the Motorola Droid smartphone, experts say that Verizon has thrown down the gauntlet to Apple and AT&T in the high-end smartphone market. But some experts initially questioned whether Verizon’s wireless network could hold up to the expected upsurge in data traffic.

Company spokespeople, however, have insisted that their network and telecom software are more than capable of handling the increased demand. "We’re anticipating the Droid will be a blockbuster, but we’re not adding any new backhaul or new EV-DO carriers for the launch. We’re not anticipating the network will take a hit on this," said Arvin Singh, a regional sales director for Verizon.

The public questions about network capacity were likely spurred, according to experts, by the much-discussed network slowdowns suffered by AT&T in the wake of widespread iPhone adoption, which resulted in a certain amount of disaffection among iPhone users.

Eric Zeman, at Information Week, expects heavy internet use to predominate among Droid users, due to the phone’s impressive browser functionality and high-end processor speed.ADNFCR-2628-ID-19474871-ADNFCR
