Analysts: Hackers will target App Store for future malware campaigns
Wednesday, November 25th, 2009The advent of the iPhone worm, although they thus far only affect users of jailbroken devices, has decisively shown that malware authors can target mobile devices. One analyst says that the next target for the cyber criminals will be the App Store.
The App Store approval process has come under fire from various quarters of late, with many makers of wireless phone applications complaining about the tortuous amount of work that goes into getting their creations into the App Store. However, many experts say that the App Store still doesn’t vet the applicants with enough care to ensure that they will be malware-free.
Apple’s Phil Schiller talked to Business Week about the process, saying that most of the rejections are for functionality issues or software bugs. However, Schiller did not address security concerns, leaving it to the Business Week writer to raise the specter of advanced cell phone malware.
Smart phones are increasingly influential in both the consumer and enterprise marketplaces, and security features could play a critical role in determining the extent of that influence.
