Google phone rumors won’t go away
Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009Although Google continues to deny that it will produce its own Android-powered smartphone, saying that it would be foolish to compete with the Android phone makers already producing devices, rumors continue to swirl that the Google phone will soon become a reality.
Gizmodo quotes anonymous sources as saying that there are actual prototypes in existence and being tested at Google’s Mountain View, California campus. The tech blog’s sources also said that the device is running a brand-new version of Android, not previously available in commercial release.
Earlier, Tech Crunch had posited that the Google Phone might not exactly be a phone at all, but rather a combination internet and VoIP device, using the company’s Google Voice wireless phone application to route calls over cellular data networks.
Nothing about the prospective Google Phone – whatever its form – is yet known, and some experts say that the company would be ill-advised to release such a device, which could only serve to antagonize the numerous handset makers that have thus far collaborated with Google on Android-powered devices.
