Samsung to launch new mobile phone OS
Wednesday, December 9th, 2009Wireless phone applications will have a new platform on which to run with the launch of Samsung’s Bada smartphone operating system. Company executives introduced the new OS at a launch event in London earlier this week.
Bada will have the ability to run multiple web browsers, social media networking applications, and advanced touchscreens, according to Sascha Segan of PC Magazine. PC World’s Jared Newman says that Samsung is trying to attract wireless phone application developers to Bada via a combination of advanced functionality and flexibility. Newman characterizes Bada as an attempt to bring more advanced apps to lower-end smartphones.
Some online commentators, however, still have questions about Bada. Segan calls Samsung’s description of the programming underpinnings of Bada – "Linux or RTOS" – "coy to the point of being confusing." Segan speculates that Bada "may be a set of APIs and middleware rather than a single, unified OS platform."
Bada will eventually be deployed extensively around the world, but Samsung said that the OS will initially appear on a single cell phone to be released in early 2010.
