New layout for Apple’s wireless phone applications store emphasizes graphics

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Apple unveiled a new design for its online wireless phone applications store this weekend, revealing changes to page layout that place greater emphasis on pictures and less emphasis on text.

Under the new store design, the logos for wireless phone applications are bigger, as are buy buttons. Two new buttons allow shoppers to switch quickly between customer reviews for the current version of an application and reviews for all versions.

Changes were also made to the way the store presents screenshots. Customers can now view two or three screenshots, separated from the rest of the product page by a frame, whereas before product pages only showed one screenshot.

Customer ratings now appear in their own box on the left-hand side of the screen. Before the new changes, ratings appeared in the same panel as customer reviews.

In making these changes to its online store for wireless phone applications, Apple may be trying to enhance its reputation as a user-friendly competitor to other mobile device operating system providers such as Google. Even though Apple’s iPhone still dominates the market for mobile internet devices, other providers have been showing signs over the past year of catching up.
