Google leak reveals new device for Android wireless phone applications
Tuesday, December 15th, 2009Leaked evidence from Google employees reveals that the company will release its own unlocked mobile device running wireless phone applications on the Android platform early next year, according to a report released Monday.
Employees are posting photos of the new mobile handsets and distributing them to friends after receiving prototype models from the company for internal testing, Wired magazine reported. And user logs from websites visited by users reveal the name of the new device to be Nexus One.
"We recently came up with the concept of a mobile lab, which is a device that combines innovative hardware from a partner with software that runs on Android," said Google vice president of product management Mario Queiroz in a post to the company’s blog this weekend.
According to the magazine, information obtained by hackers reveals that the phone will include Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chip, combined Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/FM radio capabilities, and a pair of stereo speakers, making it competitive in hardware with Apple’s iPhone.
Google has made previous forays into the mobile internet industry with the Android platform and its line of wireless phone applications, but this unlocked handset would be its first major foray into the mobile hardware world.
