South Korean smartphone producer says it will move two million devices in 2010
Thursday, January 14th, 2010The largest cell phone maker in tech-savvy South Korea, SK Telecom, announced this week that its target for total sales in 2010 was two million.
To that end, SK Telecom will release 15 new smartphone models this year, as well as 25 more in the year 2013. The majority of the devices will use Google’s Android OS, which is developing into aa serious enterprise mobility platform, experts say.
Tech blog Android Guys reports that SK Telecom’s chief rival, Korea Telecom, has been selling Apple’s iPhone in Korea since late 2009, selling 240,000 units. The announced proliferation of Android devices could turn South Korea into a battleground between Google and Apple, the blog said.
The Wall Street Journal says that SK Telecom aims to increase the smartphone’s market penetration in the interest of creating a bigger market for its enterprise wireless solutions. As smartphone sales rose during the recent recession, overall sales of cellular handsets fell, putting handset makers like SK Telecom in a difficult position in the market.
