Verizon, Motorola officially announce Droid launch

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Bellicose advertisements for the device have been out for some time, and plenty of specific information has been leaked already. But the official announcement of the purportedly iPhone-killing Droid finally took place today.

The Droid’s technical details are already known. It boasts a slightly larger screen than the iPhone – the device that it’s built to compete with – along with much higher screen resolution. Experts have, so far, been highly impressed with the Droid’s speedy performance and ease of use. Many reviewers praised the slide-out QWERTY keyboard as being good enough for touch typing, and call quality was said to be generally high.

Giancarlo Fasolo, director of project management at Motorola, told PC World that the Droid’s high performance was due in part to "hardware acceleration," and that the phone was designed for "best-in-class connectivity."

The device will be available for sale on November 6, and will cost about $200 after a mail-in rebate and a two-year contract purchase. Cell phone expenses won’t drop with the Droid, however: Users should expect to pay roughly $70 per month for voice and data service.ADNFCR-2628-ID-19432237-ADNFCR
