Verizon and AT&T expand conflict to pricing wars

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Telecom giants AT&T and Verizon have both aided efforts at telecom billing management by cutting their rates for voice and data plans offered to enterprise and consumer users.

Verizon precipitated the price war by announcing Friday that it would slash the monthly price of its unlimited voice plan by $30, taking it from $100 to $70. The move was quickly matched by AT&T, which announced that it would also cut the price of its unlimited voice and data plan to $100 from $130. While Mobile Marketing Watch says that this is not AT&T’s cheapest smartphone plan, iPhone users should be grateful for the smaller fee.

That publication also predicted that shrinking fees for smartphone data plans will tend to increase adoption rates, as will requirements that smartphone purchasers buy a data plan to obtain the subsidized price.

Mobile phone analyst Jeff Kagan told the Dallas Morning News that he was "surprised it took so long for the two companies to make a move," and that he expects further cuts to data plan rates in the near future.ADNFCR-2628-ID-19564020-ADNFCR
