Qwest ending wireless service October 31
Wednesday, August 19th, 2009Qwest began notifying its wireless customers yesterday that they have 60 days to switch their Qwest Wireless service to another wireless provider. For enterprises concerned about their mobile billing, it’s important to note that early termination fees will not apply.
Qwest announced its plan to exit the wireless business last year and began offering Verizon Wireless service to Qwest customers. Qwest Wireless customers who select Verizon Wireless as their provider can take advantage of combined billing and exclusive handset offers from Verizon Wireless.
"Our goal is to offer service that meets the needs of our customers and to provide timely information about changes or events that impact that service," said Neil E. Cox, Qwest executive vice president. "Last year, through our strong alliance with Verizon Wireless, our customers began the move to [Verizon]. Today, we are reminding those who have not transitioned that Qwest Wireless service will end on October 31."
The announcement that one more wireless provider is exiting the market could be bad news for competitiveness and prices in the enterprise mobility market. Companies that don’t keep close tabs on their mobile billing could end up paying the price.
According to a recent study by market research firm Gartner, 80 percent of enterprises will overspend on their wireless service costs by an average of 15 percent through 2014.
