Nokia to recall 14 million cell phone chargers
Monday, November 9th, 2009Finland-based handset maker Nokia announced today that it would recall 14 million mobile phone chargers because it had determined that they could endanger users.
While the company said that it had not heard of any accidents or injuries caused by the AC-3E, AC-3U, or AC-4U chargers, it decided to issue the recall to forestall the possibility. Nokia said that the plastic covers on the devices were faulty and could become detached from the rest of the device, exposing wiring and creating a serious shock risk to users.
The Associated Press reports that the devices subject to the recall were manufactured by a Chinese battery and auto part maker called BYD Co., but distributed under Nokia’s name. Nokia stressed that the recall was being undertaken voluntarily and that it would provide safe replacement devices to affected consumers and mobile management professionals at no charge.
The recall comes at an inopportune time for the Finnish cell phone maker, which has seen its share of the growing smart phone market dwindle in the face of the iPhone and numerous Android-powered devices.
