Verizon wins battle of the networks, but iPhone stays top handset
Friday, December 4th, 2009The results of Consumer Reports’ latest survey of cell phone customers found that Verizon was the most popular wireless network, but that the iPhone – which is exclusive to the competing AT&T network – was the most popular handset.
The report showed, overall, that Americans were greatly attached to their phones, but that the billing wireless companies were less popular. The study indicated that U.S. customers were concerned about service levels and the high cost of some services like data and text messaging.
Consumer Reports praised several phones on each network, but the iPhone was far and away the most popular, saying that "98 percent of iPhone users would buy the phone again," even with the generally subpar service from AT&T. That network scored poorly in every measured area except text messaging and wireless web access, while Verizon’s strong coverage scores more than offset its perceived high price.
As smartphone adoption spreads further into the enterprise market, considerations of mobile management and coverage areas will become more and more important, according to analysts.
