Will the iPad supplant the iPhone?

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Among the numerous discussions touched off by Apple’s release this week of its widely hyped iPad tablet PC was one of function. Many tech experts question the device’s viability as a wireless mobile solution, given the rapid advancement of smartphone technology.

Indeed, some tech pundits seem downright hostile to the iPad, like Joe Wilcox, author of a piece at Beta News titled "12 reasons I won’t buy an Apple iPad," in which he says that the iPad is "nothing more – and some things less – than a big iPhone (without cellular voice) or iPod touch," among 11 other things.

Many dismiss Wilcox and his ilk as curmudgeons, saying that the convergence of technology, price, and Apple’s trademark elegant design will make the iPad a truly revolutionary wireless technology solution.

But others say that Wilcox may have a point. The iPad runs on a 1 GHz processor, which is about the same speed as the one that powers Google’s recently released Nexus One smartphone. During the official roll-out of the device, Apple CEO Steve Jobs lauded the iPad’s abilities for web browsing, email, video, ebook reading, and many other functions – but modern smartphones are already able to do all of that.ADNFCR-2628-ID-19585581-ADNFCR

The iPad is not a laptop replacement and was never meant to be. It’s a device between a Kindle and netbook.
